Sustainable Practices

Our mission to be sustainable is always evolving as we grow and learn.

SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES

The fashion industry's clothing production and rapid fashion trends stand as major culprits behind the planet's pollution, accounting for 10% of global carbon emissions. Surprisingly, this percentage surpasses the combined emissions from aviation and shipping. The deceptively low costs of fast fashion items also play a substantial role in perpetuating the mistreatment of workers, hazardous labor conditions, and, in some instances, even forced slave labor. However, as artisans, creators, and consumers, we possess the power to opt out.

Our intention is for you to take pride in your clothing choices, just as we take pride in crafting them. From initial conception to the final delivery of your cherished garment—and each step in between—we place the community and the environment at the forefront of every single decision we make.

MATERIALS

Exclusively employing vintage, deadstock, and eco-friendly materials is our commitment when it comes to crafting our clothing. Our fervor lies in rescuing textiles from their fate in landfills and breathing new vitality into them. Whether it's an aged quilt, a tablecloth with history, or a roll of vintage deadstock, our preference is to fashion pieces from materials that already possess a story.

SOURCING

Here in our sunny state of California, it might not always be feasible to source every component required for garment production locally. However, our commitment to utilizing USA-made materials eradicates the need for overseas shipping and the environmental impact it brings.

PRODUCTION

At present, all our items are meticulously crafted in our California studio by the skilled hands of Jillian herself. Addressing the matter of sustainability, we continuously brainstorm strategies for business expansion, recognizing that a solo endeavor is not a sustainable long-term solution. As we chart our course forward, we carefully align our choices with our core principles. Our commitment remains steadfast: we will only bring on additional sewing artisans when we can ensure they receive a fair and livable wage. Should the decision lead us to collaborate with manufacturers, selecting an eco-conscious company that prioritizes the well-being of its workforce—both in terms of emotional and financial aspects—will be a non-negotiable criterion.

TRANSPARENCY

Why are we sharing “maybe” and “future” plans? Because you cannot be truly sustainable without transparency and accountability. As a growing company, things are ever-changing, and you as our supporters will be the first to know about these changes. We aim to be an open book, so if you ever have questions about our practices, we’d love to hear from you. jillian@jilliep.com

SHIPPING

Your cherished items will be dispatched to you within a compostable package, thoughtfully created through a zero-waste process that incorporates plant-derived materials. This environmentally conscious packaging choice originates from a certified carbon-free facility. And as a bonus, we find them to be incredibly adorable!

RECYCLE

We aim to use as much of the material we source as possible. You’ll often see us using the scraps from a quilt coat to make a hat, bag, etc. However, it’s not always possible to use things up 100%. That is why we donate our scraps to local artists, other makers, and anybody who wants to get crafty. If you’re interested in our scraps please get in touch.
